Bristol Brunel Academy

Distance learning newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers,
This has been the most unusual time for all of us and, as we reach the end of the academic year, we look back with a sense of quiet contemplation on our journey together. I know that this is not the year we would have wished for our young people and our community, but we have learnt a great deal about ourselves through this process. I feel immense pride in our academy and our community in the way we have worked together to navigate this challenging path. The sense of community that we all feel now is palpable.

I want to thank all our parents and carers for your support over these past months. I know first hand with my own 2 children the challenges of home schooling and working at the same time, I have a deepened admiration for our early years and key stage 1 colleagues! I want to pass on my gratitude to our students who have adapted to their new learning provision. I must also say a public thank you to all the BBA staff who have, as always, gone above and beyond the call of duty. This has been a collaborative team effort from everyone in our academy community,
thank you!

I have some important updates to provide you with ahead of the academy closing for the summer holidays, you will find these in the following pages of this year’s final newsletter.

allow students to choose the method that they prefer. We will write to confirm the details as soon as
we are able. We realise that this is an anxious time for students and parents; please do contact the Year

Re-opening in September

Plans for re-opening in September
We will have 2 INSET days at the start of the year to provide additional staff training on the updated
plans for re-opening following lockdown. Year groups will be invited in for half day sessions to
support their integration into the safety plans we have in place for staff and students. The Academy
will feel different, we have a one-way system on corridors, separate dining areas for students from each
year group and staggered arrival and departure times for the start and end of the day as well as break
and lunch time. The dates and times for students are detailed below:

Covid-19 Safety Measures:
In the academy there will be measures in place that continue to minimise the risk of infection for
everyone in our community:
• Frequent thorough hand washing as part of everyday routine
• Good respiratory hygiene habits, ‘Catch It, Bin It, Kill It’
• Enhanced regular cleaning arrangements
• Active engagement with the NHS Test and Trace system
• Year group bubbles that reduce contacts between groups of students as far as possible
• Maximising distancing between those in school as far as possible

Changes to the structure of the school day to support social distancing:
Based on Government guidance we are creating year group ‘bubbles’ and to support this we have
made changes to the structure of the school day and some of our normal procedures. A brief
summary of the changes:

  • Please make sure you are aware of the arrival and departure times and the entrances students must use as detailed on the table below.
  • Students will not be allowed on site before the times shown below, students must arrive on time for the start of the day.
  • We will not have hot food at break or lunch, we will have a selection of sandwiches, baguettes and pasta.
  • Breakfast club will not be running until further notice.
  • Student lockers will not be in use until further notice, students will need to carry their belongings in their bags throughout the day. If students require support with this, please contact the Year Team or Learning Support.
  • If students have PE, they can wear their PE kit to school on that day only.

The new timings of the day are detailed below, it is designed to reduce year groups mixing
outside of their bubbles, please support the Academy by discussing this with them before they return
in September.

‘Initially Yours’ is now open and available for uniform sales.  We will be returning in full uniform in September.

End of Year Information

End of Year reports and Parent Meetings:
Years 7 to 10 will receive a report for the academic year followed up with a tutor phone call over the final week of term Monday 13 th July to Friday 17 th July. The report and parent phone call will be in two parts, the first will discuss students’ progress before lockdown and the second part will discuss progress during lockdown with distance learning. We understand the complexities of distance learning for our families, we are therefore keen to make this a dialogue between parents / carers and the tutor. Tutor phone calls are being booked using our usual Parents Evening Booking System
https://bristolbrunel.schoolcloud.co.uk/

Reports are focused on the following important characteristics we are looking for when we return in
September:

  • Attendance
  • Effort
  • Completion of work
  • Positive behaviours

Activities and support over the summer:
We would like to thank parents and carers for supporting our students in completing work this term. We know how difficult it can be! We want to encourage families to take a break over the summer. However, some families have said that it is helpful to have activities to help keep children occupied. With this in mind, we have created a document which links to a number of optional summer activities. This can be found on our website. The sites below also signpost families to additional support should you need it.

OPTIONAL SUMMER WORK

We hope that the home learning that we have been providing since the academy closed on March 23rd has supported your children with ongoing education and given them some stability through this challenging time.    We have been pleased with the feedback that we have received and have used it to develop our provision.  It has been announced (on the 2nd July by the Department for Education) that schools will return in full in the Autumn term (on which we will update as things progress).

With this in mind we want to encourage families to take a break over the summer, perhaps balanced with some ‘optional work’.  The feedback from parents suggests that this approach was helpful in keeping children motivated over the Easter and May breaks.

Please click here to open the document, accessing the optional work.

I wish you a restful and relaxing summer break and look forward with anticipation to a new academic year.
Warm regards
Mr Jon Jones, Principal
